I was reading some online articles this morning and came across one written by a girl complaining about the discrimination against coloured skin. She wasn't talking about racial discrimination but her complaints were voiced against people who preferred fair skin in women. It is true that in our society (asian) most of us prefer to be fair than dark. Somehow we have been brought up to believe standing under the sun will destroy our good looks, namely our skin. The complete opposite is true in western communities where the gold, tanned look is prized. One will never find bottles of tanning lotion in our shopping centres. Even if there were, it would be right at the bottom shelf practically hidden from sight.
I won't say her arguments are not justified but the issue of skin colour preference in the light of beauty is not all that important. It is the nature of man to want something that they haven't got. I have had countless wishes as I have grown up.. wishing i had less hair and then more hair , longer legs, smaller eyes , flatter cheeks... the list is endless ! Well, as the saying goes ' the grass is always greener on the other side'
I say we don't complain about such issues. Take it in stride and accept oneself as one is. Other people are entitled to their opinions and so are we. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder does it not ? I have come to learn to think that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
Nicer maybe.. but not greener :) hahah..
